Patna: Pre-monsoon activity is set to intensify across Bihar from Wednesday, with the Meteorological Centre issuing a statewide alert for thunderstorms, rain, and lightning. The development is expected to bring temporary relief from the ongoing heatwave conditions across most parts of the state.

According to the weather office, thunderstorm and rain activity will remain active till May 3, leading to a drop in maximum temperatures by 1 to 3 degrees Celsius in several districts. Alerts have been issued for all 38 districts of Bihar, including orange alerts in 19 districts and yellow alerts in the remaining 19.

Officials warned of lightning strikes, strong winds, and spells of heavy rainfall in isolated areas. Districts such as Kishanganj, Madhubani, and Sitamarhi are likely to receive heavy rainfall at one or two places. In north Bihar, wind speeds may reach 50–60 kmph, accompanied by thunder and lightning. Meanwhile, districts in southwest, south-central, and southeast Bihar are expected to witness winds of 40–50 kmph along with lightning activity.

Meteorologists attributed the sudden change in weather to multiple factors. A cyclonic circulation has developed over eastern Uttar Pradesh, while a trough line extends from Bihar towards southern India. Additionally, moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal are continuously feeding into the region, triggering unstable weather conditions.

In Patna, the weather has turned relatively pleasant, with the maximum temperature recorded at around 35 degrees Celsius, lower than previous days. Cloud cover and gusty winds have provided respite from the heat. The weather department has forecast light rain and strong winds in Patna and adjoining areas over the next 24 hours.

Similar conditions were reported from other districts. Jamui witnessed cloudy skies and cool winds since morning, with rainfall likely during the day. Nalanda also reported overcast conditions, with the maximum temperature expected to be around 37 degrees Celsius and minimum around 24 degrees Celsius. In Bagaha, cloud cover since morning has raised the possibility of rain, bringing relief from heat. Begusarai too experienced cloudy weather and strong winds, offering respite to residents from rising temperatures.
