Patna/Samastipur: Indian authorities have started the process of creating digital identification numbers for farmers ahead of the release of the 22nd instalment of the Prime Minister’s Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme, officials said on Saturday.
The registration drive has begun in Samastipur district in Bihar under the Farmer Registry programme, part of the National e-Governance Plan in Agriculture. Officials said more than 226,000 farmers in the district are enrolled under the PM Kisan scheme and will be issued a unique farmer ID.
According to the agriculture department, more than 6,700 farmers have already completed registration, while efforts are underway to cover the remaining beneficiaries through accelerated campaigns at block and village levels.

🌱 Goal: Transparency, faster benefits & accurate farmer database
The additional district magistrate, Brajesh Kumar, described the farmer registry as a priority initiative for the state government, aimed at improving transparency and streamlining compensation processes during crop loss or natural disasters.
Officials said the farmer ID will include details such as land records, Aadhaar number and a registered mobile phone number. To enrol, farmers must complete Aadhaar-based e-KYC, verify land ownership records and digitally sign the application.
The Bihar agriculture department said the farmer registry is a key component of India’s digital public infrastructure for agriculture, and that the central government has made the farmer ID mandatory for PM Kisan beneficiaries going forward.
