Patna : Indian Railways is set to roll out an artificial intelligence-powered water monitoring system in trains across Bihar to ensure a consistent water supply for passengers.
The system, equipped with advanced hydrostatic pressure sensors, will alert railway staff whenever water levels in train coaches drop below a critical threshold. As part of a broader effort to modernise operations, this initiative is expected to improve passenger convenience and operational efficiency.
Using LoRa (Long Range) and GPRS-based communication, the system will transmit real-time data, even in remote areas. The sensors, with an accuracy of 0.5%, will provide precise measurements, while a built-in real-time clock will log data for analysis and timely intervention.
A senior official from East Central Railway stated, “This system will significantly enhance water management on long-distance trains, particularly during peak travel seasons like Holi, when passenger demand surges.” The official added that the project aligns with Indian Railways’ commitment to leveraging innovation for better service delivery.
The pilot project will initially be implemented on select trains, including the Brahmaputra Mail Express under the Northeast Frontier Railway. Based on its success, the system is expected to be expanded to other trains operating in Bihar and beyond.
Passengers are likely to welcome this move, as water shortages during long journeys have been a frequent issue. “It’s frustrating when there’s no water in the washrooms,” said Rajesh Kumar, 42, a regular commuter from Muzaffarpur. “This new system will definitely improve our travel experience.”
Indian Railways has emphasised that the initiative will align with its broader digital transformation strategy, which includes deploying Internet of Things (IoT) solutions to enhance operational efficiency.
