Patna: Bihar Home Department has suspended internet services, including social media and messaging platforms, in parts of Muzaffarpur from 12:30 PM on July 24 until 10:00 AM on July 26. The decision was taken following recommendations from the Muzaffarpur District Magistrate (DM) and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) to prevent the spread of rumours.
The suspension applies to the Town-1 and Town-2 police subdivisions of Muzaffarpur. Authorities said the temporary restrictions are intended to maintain public order amid concerns over misinformation circulating on digital platforms.
Services Covered Under the Suspension
According to the Home Department’s order, access to 24 internet-based services has been blocked during the suspension period. These include social networking and messaging platforms such as Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), WhatsApp, and Instagram.
Broadband internet communication services have also been suspended in the affected areas.
Order Issued Under Telecommunications Act
The Home Department issued the directive under the provisions of the Telecommunications Act, 2023. Responsibility for implementing and monitoring the restrictions has been assigned to the Muzaffarpur District Magistrate and the Superintendent of Police.
Officials said the move is aimed at preventing the circulation of rumours and messages that could disturb law and order.
Essential Services Exempt
The Home Department clarified that the restrictions will not affect government internet services or essential internet-based operations. Banking services, railway services, and other authorised government digital services will continue to function normally during the suspension period.
The temporary restrictions will remain in force until 10:00 AM on July 26, unless revised by the authorities.
