Jaipur/ Patna: A 19-year-old student from Bihar studying at a private university in Jaipur has died by suicide, with police saying he was under severe stress after being caught cheating during an examination.
The student, identified as Priyanshu Raj, a resident of Patna, was enrolled in the first year of a computer science course and lived in the university hostel. According to police, he was caught cheating during an exam on Saturday, after which his answer sheet and notes were confiscated.
Later that day, Priyanshu travelled on a rented scooter to an under-construction building in the Bagru area, around 5km from the campus. Police said he left his bag and mobile phone on the 12th floor before jumping from the building. He was declared dead at the scene.
Officers recovered identity documents from his bag, along with a bottle of poison. A senior police officer said the presence of the items suggested the student had been under extreme mental distress. “He appeared to be deeply affected by the incident during the examination,” the officer said.
The body has been sent for postmortem examination, and police said they are informing the family and examining the circumstances leading up to the death. University authorities have not yet issued a statement.
