Patna: A student preparing for the JEE Mains examination was found dead under suspicious circumstances at a boys’ hostel in Patna’s Kankarbagh area, prompting a police investigation and allegations of murder from his family.
The deceased has been identified as Satyam, alias Utkarsh Kumar, a resident of Mahua. He had been living in Patna for about four months while preparing for the JEE Mains examination and was enrolled at Allen coaching institute.
His father, Chandrashekhar Rai, has alleged that his son was murdered and accused the hostel operator, administrator and another resident of the room. The allegations have not been independently established.
Father questions circumstances of death
Rai said he had spoken to his son by telephone at about 11pm the previous night and that the conversation appeared normal.
According to him, the family received a call at about 11.16am, informing them that Utkarsh had been found hanging from a ceiling fan in his room.
Rai said he rushed to the hostel and found the room’s door broken, with police already at the scene. He questioned the circumstances in which his son’s body was found, claiming that the student’s feet were touching the bed and that the noose was positioned towards the back of his neck.
These claims will be subject to investigation and forensic examination.
Forensic team examines hostel room
Kankarbagh police reached the hostel after being alerted and took possession of the body before sending it for post-mortem examination.
A team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) was also called to examine the scene and collect evidence. Senior FSL scientist Anil Kumar Singh visited the hostel with his team.
Police said no suicide note was found in the room. The student’s mobile phone has been seized and sent to the laboratory for analysis.
Station House Officer Abhay Kumar said the family had not yet filed a formal complaint.
Police are questioning other students staying at the hostel and other people connected to the case. The circumstances and cause of Utkarsh’s death remain unclear, and investigators are awaiting forensic and post-mortem findings.
