Jehanabad/Patna:A murder accused was injured in a police encounter in Jehanabad district on Wednesday after allegedly firing at police personnel during an arms recovery operation, officials said.
The accused, identified as Vikku Singh alias Ravan, is a named accused in the Deepak Singh murder case registered under the Bhelawar police station area. Police said he sustained a bullet injury to his left leg during the exchange of fire near Dhuriyari canal in the Ghosi police station area.
He is being treated at Jehanabad Sadar Hospital under heavy security.
Police say accused opened fire during weapon recovery
Superintendent of Police Aparajita Lohani confirmed the incident and said the accused had earlier been arrested in connection with the murder case.
According to police, a team comprising Jehanabad Police and the Special Task Force (STF) had taken Singh to the canal area to recover the weapon allegedly used in the crime.
During the operation, the accused allegedly retrieved a weapon hidden in nearby bushes and opened fire at the police team. Officials said the bullet struck the vehicle of the Ghosi station house officer, while no police personnel were injured.
Police said the accused then attempted to flee, following which officers fired in self-defence. One bullet hit Singh in the leg, bringing him under control.
Series of police encounters reported in Bihar
The Jehanabad encounter is among several such incidents reported across the state in recent days.
According to police data, six encounter incidents involving alleged criminals have taken place across the state in the last five days. In several of these cases, accused persons sustained leg injuries during exchanges of fire with police.
Officials said the accused involved in these incidents were facing allegations related to murder, robbery and snatching cases.
