Patna: Uncertainty has emerged among devotees over the date of this year’s Jivitputrika, or Jiutiya, Vrat, with scholars divided between October 3 and October 4.
One group of scholars has recommended observing the fast on Sunday, October 4, with Paran on October 5. Another group has supported Saturday, October 3, with the fast to be broken after 7:28am on October 4.
Why October 4 Is Being Considered
Scholars supporting October 4 have cited the Bhavishyottara Purana, which describes Jivitputrika Vrat as a fast associated with Ashtami Tithi during the Krishna Paksha of Ashwin.
According to their interpretation, October 3 is affected by Saptami Tithi, which continues until 9:54am. They therefore consider October 4 more appropriate because Ashtami prevails at sunrise, known as Udaya-Ashtami.
They have also argued that the absence of Udaya-Navami on the following day does not prevent October 4 from being considered suitable for the fast and subsequent Paran.
Why October 3 Is Also Being Observed
Another group of scholars has reached a different conclusion after examining scriptures and commonly used Panchangs.
They said several almanacs, including Rishikesh Panchang, Vishwa Panchang, Mahavir Panchang, Hanuman Panchang and Aditya Panchang, list October 3 as the date for Jivitputrika Vrat.
Under this calculation, devotees would observe the fast on October 3 and worship Jimutavahan during Pradosh Kaal while Ashtami Tithi is in effect. The fast would then be broken after 7:28am on October 4.
Devotees Seek Clarity
The conflicting interpretations have created uncertainty among devotees preparing for the festival.
Community representatives said similar differences over the date of Jivitputrika Vrat were reported last year as well. They have called for scholars to jointly examine the relevant scriptures and Panchangs and issue a common clarification.
With the two interpretations continuing to differ, devotees are currently being advised to follow the Panchang and religious guidance they consider authoritative.
