Khagaria: A pontoon bridge built over the Kosi river near Birbas village in the Gogri block of Khagaria district is poised to bring major relief to residents of Bihar’s flood-prone riverine regions. Constructed at a cost of more than Rs 25 crore, the bridge spans around 500 metres and has been described by officials as a crucial improvement in local connectivity.
The bridge is expected to directly benefit people from at least 25 diara villages spread across Khagaria, Madhepura, Munger and Bhagalpur districts. For years, residents have relied on boats or long detours to cross the river, often turning short journeys into exhausting day-long trips. Local estimates suggest that more than one lakh people will now be able to travel more safely and efficiently.
Baboolal Shaurya, the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) MLA from the Parbatta assembly constituency, said the pontoon bridge fulfilled a long-pending demand of the region. He said improved connectivity would not only make daily commuting easier but also boost access to markets, healthcare and education for people living in remote riverine areas.
According to local residents and officials, the bridge is likely to be opened for vehicular traffic from January 28, subject to final checks. Once operational, it is expected to significantly alter the region’s transport patterns, especially during the dry season when pontoon bridges are most viable.
The bridge will connect Zero Mile in Madhepura with Kapsiya Ghat, dramatically reducing the distance between Khagaria and Madhepura districts. Currently, travellers heading towards Alamnagar must cover nearly 70 kilometres, but the new route will cut that distance down to just 25 kilometres, saving time, fuel and costs for thousands of daily commuters.
