Madhubani: Tension gripped the Town police station area of Madhubani after suspended MNREGA employment assistant Mohammad Riyaz was shot dead by unidentified bike-borne assailants near Mahavir Colony on Friday.
Riyaz, son of Mohammad Fahim Akhtar and a resident of Basopatti, was returning home after testifying in a case in Patna when the criminals opened fire, killing him on the spot. Locals immediately alerted the Town police station, prompting a swift response.
A police team reached the scene, and Superintendent of Police Yogendra Kumar personally arrived to oversee the investigation. An FSL team was called in to collect evidence. In addition, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed under the leadership of Sadar SDPO One, conducting raids across the area. Police have assured that the perpetrators will be apprehended soon.
Riyaz had been suspended two years ago following a case filed against him. His wife, Jannat Parveen, alleged that she had been repeatedly threatened with death by three former Panchayat officers and the Panchayat Samiti. She had requested security during her testimony in Patna, but no measures were taken. Based on her statement, a case has been registered naming the three former officers.
SP Yogendra Kumar also announced the suspension of PO Mrityunjay Kumar, who was on night patrol at the time, citing negligence. The SP assured that a thorough investigation is underway and that all responsible parties would be identified and arrested. He is scheduled to hold a press conference this evening to provide further details to the media.
Riyaz’s family is mourning the sudden and tragic loss.
