Patna: Maithili speakers in Bihar have welcomed a historic decision by the central government to include their language in the translation of parliamentary speeches. Janata Dal (United) acting national president and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Kumar Jha expressed his appreciation for the inclusion of Maithili in parliamentary translations. In a social media post, he stated, “The inclusion of Maithili in the translation of parliamentary speeches is a proud moment for all of us. This step not only honors our rich linguistic heritage but also ensures that Maithili speakers can engage more deeply with parliamentary proceedings.”
Bihar deputy CM Samrat Choudhary stated on social media that Maithili, along with six other Indian languages, will now be part of official Lok Sabha translations. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for elevating Bihar’s cultural identity, citing the inclusion of Maithili as a milestone for the state.
Until now, parliamentary speeches were translated into 22 languages. With the inclusion of Maithili, Bodo, Dogri, Manipuri, Urdu, and Sanskrit, the total has risen to 28, ensuring wider accessibility for diverse linguistic communities.
The decision is seen as part of the government’s broader effort to promote regional languages and honour India’s linguistic diversity. Maithili, spoken by millions in Bihar and neighbouring regions, is now officially recognised in parliamentary proceedings, allowing speakers to follow discussions in their native tongue.
