Mob Attacks Police in Darbhanga: Stones Pelted, Weapons Snatched, Children Used as Shields
Darbhanga: On January 4, a mob in Darbhanga attacked a Laheriasarai police station team dispatched to arrest two criminals. The officers were assaulted with lathis, pelted with stones, and faced attempts to seize their weapons. The incident occurred in Abhanda village, forcing the police to retreat to safeguard their lives. Three policemen sustained minor injuries: ASI RK Dubey, PSI Inspector Amit Kumar, and another constable. The clash between the crowd and the police lasted for approximately 30 minutes.
The police had arrived to apprehend Jitendra Yadav, a long-time absconder, based on a court warrant and attachment order. Upon arresting Jitendra, the team was surrounded by villagers who freed him and spirited him away. Subsequently, the mob engaged in arson and raised slogans.
The police team was attacked twice. Sadar SDPO Amit Kumar reported that the Laheriasarai police encountered resistance from the accused and their families upon arrival. The officers sustained injuries and were promptly transported to the hospital.
SDPO Amit Kumar further stated, “The accused, their relatives, and local residents obstructed the road by setting tires ablaze. The police were pelted with stones, but the situation is currently under control. The stone-pelters have been dispersed, and efforts are underway to identify the culprits based on video footage.”
The police resorted to brandishing weapons to control the crowd and fired one round into the air. Shockingly, the mob employed children aged 5, 7, 9, and 10 as shields, using them to hurl stones. Some stone-pelters have been detained, and the two individuals who were the subject of the arrest warrants have also been apprehended.
