Muzaffarpur: Two men, including a junior engineer, have died after their car fell into a canal in Muzaffarpur late on Thursday night. The victims, Sunny Kumar, a junior engineer in the electricity department, and his colleague Afzal Kumar, were unable to escape the vehicle due to the water pressure and suffocated inside.
The accident occurred on a bridge over the Vaishali canal near Ekma Chowk in the Deoria police station area. According to authorities, the car was travelling at an estimated speed of 80 km/h when it lost control, breached the bridge railing, and plunged into the canal. The vehicle remained submerged overnight.
Villagers discovered the car in the morning and alerted local residents, who then contacted the police. A rescue operation was launched, and the car was retrieved with the help of a crane. Sunny’s body was found in the front seat and Afzal’s in the back. Preliminary reports suggest both men tried to escape, breaking car handles and possibly attempting to smash the windows.
Sunny Kumar, the youngest of three brothers, was due to be married in March. Both men lived in the Mithanpura area of Muzaffarpur. Police have informed the families and sent the bodies to Shri Krishna Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examinations.
Deoria Station House Officer Manoj Kumar Sah said: “Initial investigations indicate this was a road accident. The vehicle likely went out of control, broke through the railing, and fell into the canal. We are verifying the speed and timing of the incident and will take further action based on the families’ statements.”
