Nalanda: 105 Petrol Pumps Under Scanner to Ensure Fuel Accuracy

Nalanda: In a major step to protect consumer rights and ensure the purity and accuracy of fuel dispensing, the Weights and Measures Department of Nalanda has launched a district-wide inspection drive covering all 105 petrol pumps. The campaign aims to eliminate discrepancies in fuel measurement and curb possible adulteration in petrol and diesel.
District Inspector Shatrunjay Kumar confirmed that each pump will be inspected on scheduled dates. “Ensuring accurate fuel quantity to consumers is our top priority. If any irregularity is detected, strict legal action will be taken against the pump owner,” he said.
Inspection Drive to Cover Measuring Equipment and Biodiesel Outlets
As part of this initiative, department officials will check all fuel dispensing equipment, including nozzles and metering systems. A key focus will also be verifying the documents of seven operating biodiesel pumps in the district.
Currently, Indian Oil Corporation has the highest presence with 61 petrol pumps, followed by Bharat Petroleum (18), Hindustan Petroleum (17), and one pump each by Reliance Industries and Nayara Energy. The department emphasized that biodiesel pump records will be reviewed thoroughly, especially in light of past violations.
In 2021, a biodiesel pump on the Bihta–Sarmera Road in Madhopur (Chandi block) was sealed for operating without a No Objection Certificate (NOC). It resumed operations months later, raising concerns that now warrant closer scrutiny.
How Consumers Can Check Fuel Purity at Home
The department also issued public guidance on detecting petrol adulteration. Consumers can request a filter paper from pump staff and place two drops of petrol on it. If a dark stain remains after drying, adulteration is likely. Additionally, consumers can verify fuel density, which should be within 730–800 kg/m³ for petrol and 830–900 kg/m³ for diesel.
Consumer Complaint Mechanism and Legal Action
Although no complaints have been officially received yet, the department encouraged consumers to report any suspected discrepancy in fuel quantity or quality. Complaints can be made to the company’s helpline number displayed at petrol stations.
“If a complaint is verified, the pump may face penalties, including fines, notices, or even legal proceedings. Consumers also have the right to take the matter to court and seek compensation,” officials added.
Fuel Quality and Accuracy Under the Scanner
The department reiterated that this campaign is not just a routine check but part of a comprehensive strategy to maintain transparency in fuel distribution. “Accurate fuel measurement and purity are essential for building consumer trust and curbing fraudulent practices,” said Kumar.
The campaign is expected to conclude in the coming weeks, with daily inspections scheduled across different locations in the district.
