Darbhanga/Patna: A newlywed woman was abducted at gunpoint in Bihar’s Darbhanga district while travelling to her in-laws’ home, sparking outrage and a police investigation.

The incident occurred in the Sakatpur police station area late on April 26, when 20-year-old Mala Kumari, recently married to Sanjay Ram, was taken from a car by a group of armed men. The bride’s mother, Janaki Devi, filed a formal complaint, alleging that eight men on four motorbikes forced the vehicle to stop near the Suhataria bridge, brandishing pistols and threatening to kill the driver if the doors were not opened.

According to Janaki Devi, two of the assailants entered the car, dragged Mala out, and fled with her on a motorbike. The gang also allegedly looted gold and silver jewellery from the bride and groom, as well as cash. Her son, who was present during the incident, identified one of the kidnappers as Manish Kumar Yadav, a resident of their village in Madhubani district.

Fearing for her daughter’s safety, Janaki Devi has urged the police to take swift action. “The goons can do something wrong with my daughter. The police should find her at any cost,” she said.

Meanwhile, the groom Sanjay Ram has declared he will not accept Mala back, even if she is rescued. Speaking to reporters, he said: “It is a matter of our prestige. It has been tarnished. Now I’ll get married again.” He also demanded compensation from the administration for the expenses incurred during the wedding.

Local rumours suggest that Mala and Manish had been in a relationship for the past year, and that the abduction may have been a result of their alleged romance.

Sakatpur station house officer Manish Kumar confirmed that a complaint has been lodged and said that an investigation is underway.
