Patna: AIIMS Patna on Saturday hosted Dr Kanhaiya Tripathi, Special Monitor of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), for discussions on human rights practices, patient welfare, grievance redressal and institutional sensitisation.
During the visit, Tripathi stressed the need for a more humane and patient-friendly approach to handling grievances. He said patients and their attendants should be treated with dignity, empathy and respect.
Focus On Human Rights Awareness
The discussions focused on strengthening human rights literacy among healthcare professionals, students and staff at the institute.
A gender equality-based human rights perspective in institutional policies and practices was also discussed during the interaction.
Tripathi suggested exploring the establishment of a Human Rights Cell at AIIMS Patna and a Students’ Club for Human Rights to conduct awareness activities and promote respect, dignity and responsibility within the institution.
The meeting also emphasised preventive measures and awareness programmes against substance abuse, particularly among students and young people.
Proposed Programmes And Academic Initiatives
The interaction included discussions on increasing awareness of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights through educational and outreach programmes.
AIIMS Patna was encouraged to organise human rights sessions, symposia and awareness programmes, along with cultural and creative activities to communicate human rights values.
The possibility of introducing a certificate programme in Human Rights was also discussed as a way to support structured learning and capacity building.
The meeting further highlighted the importance of sharing relevant research papers and academic work on human rights with the NHRC to facilitate knowledge exchange and collaboration.
Cyber Security And Patient Data
Tripathi also stressed the importance of cyber hygiene and security, particularly in protecting sensitive institutional and patient-related information.
The need to ensure that relevant and appropriate information is displayed on the AIIMS Patna website was also discussed.
AIIMS-NHRC Collaboration
The meeting explored possibilities for greater collaboration between AIIMS Patna and the NHRC, including sharing best practices and strengthening institutional mechanisms related to human rights.
The discussions also included coordination with the State Human Rights Commission to improve awareness and implementation of human rights practices.
The visit reaffirmed AIIMS Patna’s stated commitment to healthcare practices centred on human dignity, equality, ethical conduct and responsive patient care.
