Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has revealed a custom-designed campaign vehicle, the Nishchay Rath, ahead of the upcoming assembly elections—marking a conspicuous shift in alliance dynamics as the BJP’s presence is notably absent from the promotional material.
The vehicle, specially brought in from Haryana, has been designed to resemble a high-end campaign chariot and will be used solely by Nitish Kumar during roadshows across the state. The luxury van made its debut in Madhubani on Saturday, where Kumar was seen inaugurating a series of development projects. Deputy CM and BJP leader Samrat Choudhary was present at the event, but was not seen aboard the chariot, which featured only Janata Dal (United) leaders.
The Nishchay Rath is more than just symbolic—it is outfitted with a suite of luxury features aimed at making the campaign trail more comfortable for the Chief Minister. It includes four adjustable seats, air conditioning and heating systems, privacy curtains, and tinted windows. A hydraulic lift system enables Kumar to rise to the roof of the chariot, which is surrounded by stainless steel railings and equipped with floodlights for evening appearances. The interiors boast high-quality materials and a plush design, akin to a vanity van.
The vehicle carries a prominent image of Nitish Kumar alongside the slogan: “Sisters and daughters’ dreams come true—Thank you, Nitish Kumar.” However, is any mention of the BJP or its election symbol, raising questions about the optics and coordination within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as election season looms.
Party insiders confirmed that the vehicle is intended exclusively for Kumar’s use during pre-election roadshows, inauguration ceremonies, and foundation stone-laying events. The Rath will accompany him on journeys from helipads to programme venues across various assembly constituencies.
This development comes just weeks after political imagery appeared to show a show of unity between the JDU and BJP—photos of Nitish Kumar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were seen displayed in each other’s party offices earlier this month. Political observers viewed it as a strategic attempt to reinforce NDA unity. However, the BJP’s exclusion from the Nishchay Rath suggests that JDU may be focusing on promoting Kumar’s individual appeal.
The use of campaign chariots has a rich political history in Bihar. In 2023, Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) chief Mukesh Sahni led the Nishad Reservation Yatra with what was then described as one of the most expensive chariots in the state’s history—valued between Rs 3 to Rs 4 crore. His red and gold chariot featured marble staircases, royal-style meeting rooms, a private bedroom, ornate interiors, and high-end entertainment systems.
