Muzaffarpur: For the past five years, ‘Maa Ki Rasoi’ has been providing free dinner to hundreds of poor and needy people in Muzaffarpur every night, ensuring that people who spend their nights on the streets do not go to bed hungry.
The community kitchen operates near the gate of the District Tuberculosis Centre on Sadar Hospital Road, where more than 100 people receive a nutritious meal every evening.
The initiative is run by an organisation led by Prakash Kumar. It primarily serves people who spend their nights around Muzaffarpur Railway Station, the government bus stand, Sadar Hospital and nearby pavements.
Free meals served every night
Every evening, poor people and daily-wage workers line up outside the centre to receive their meals. The food is served without discrimination, allowing people in need to have a full meal with dignity.
The organisers say the service continues even during difficult weather conditions, including extreme cold, storms and heavy winds.
‘The beginning was challenging’
Prakash Kumar said the initiative was started after he witnessed the difficult conditions faced by poor people, including children and elderly persons living on the streets.
He said the sight of people struggling to find food prompted him to think about doing something for those who were forced to sleep hungry.
The initiative began with that simple idea of serving people in need. Kumar said running the kitchen was challenging in the initial years, but local residents and financially capable members of the community gradually began supporting the effort after seeing the commitment of his team.
Today, the kitchen is sustained through a combination of public contributions and Kumar’s personal financial support.
A source of inspiration in Muzaffarpur
Over the years, Maa Ki Rasoi has become an example of community service in Muzaffarpur.
The initiative demonstrates how sustained individual effort and community support can help address a basic need such as food for people living in difficult circumstances.
For the people who depend on the meals, the kitchen has become a regular source of food and support. Local residents have also appreciated Kumar and his team for continuing the service and helping people living on the streets of the city.
