New Delhi: Renowned folk singer and Padma Bhushan awardee, Sharda Sinha, is in a critical condition and has been placed on a ventilator at AIIMS, Delhi. The 72-year-old singer, best known for her Maithili, Bhojpuri, and Hindi folk songs, was admitted after her health deteriorated last month.
According to AIIMS Medical Superintendent Dr. Nirupam Madan, Sinha’s condition remains stable but critical. “She has been on a ventilator since Monday, but there is no significant improvement in her health as of now,” said Dr. Madan.
In response to the news, Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally reached out to the AIIMS Director to inquire about Sharda Sinha’s health. The Prime Minister also extended his support to her family, consoling her son, Anshuman Sinha, with words of comfort and hope. “God and Chhathi Maiya will surely bless her. Take care of yourself,” PM Modi said, as shared by Anshuman through his social media.
Anshuman Sinha had earlier updated followers about his mother’s condition, posting on social media, “Mother has been put on a ventilator. She needs your prayers now more than ever. Please continue praying.” This message came after he had previously shared updates regarding her declining health, asking fans and well-wishers for their support.
Sharda Sinha has been in Delhi AIIMS since October 22, when her health took a sudden turn for the worse. Initially placed in the ICU, her condition worsened, leading to her being placed on ventilatory support. Her health has been a concern since the recent passing of her husband due to a brain hemorrhage, which reportedly triggered her own health issues, including difficulties with eating and drinking.
Despite her declining health, Sharda Sinha’s legacy continues to inspire. Just before her hospitalization, her son released an audio track of her latest Chhath song on October 30, followed by the official video, keeping her connection with her fans alive even in these tough times.
Sharda Sinha, born on October 1, 1952, in Supaul district of Bihar, rose to prominence through her contributions to Maithili, Bhojpuri, and Bajjika folk music. Over the years, her voice has become a staple in cultural celebrations, including Chhath Puja, Durga Puja, and wedding ceremonies, not only in Bihar but also across North India. She has sung iconic songs for Bollywood films like Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, which cemented her status as a beloved artist.
Her contribution to Indian folk music has earned her numerous accolades, including the prestigious Padma Bhushan, the Bihar Kokila title, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.
