New delhi: Dr Pankaj Singh was sworn in as a minister in Delhi’s state cabinet on Thursday, a day after performing the final rites for his mother, who passed away recently. Singh, the newly elected Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Vikaspuri, was one of six ministers appointed by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) success in the Delhi Assembly elections.
The emotional occasion was underscored by a heartfelt tribute to his late mother and to Bihar, his home state. Singh hails from Dharauli village in the Brahmapur block of Buxar district, where his family’s roots run deep. His younger brother, Neeraj Singh, expressed his pride, saying, “If mother were alive today, she would have felt very proud,” highlighting the poignant nature of the day.
Singh’s rise to the cabinet is seen as a significant achievement, not only for him personally but for his home state of Bihar as well. The son of the late Rajmohan Singh, a former MCD Commissioner, Pankaj Singh’s political journey has been shaped by both administrative experience and a dedication to community development.
Addressing the media after his swearing-in, Singh made a notable promise for the people of Delhi, vowing that the Yamuna River would be cleaned ahead of the Chhath festival this year. His commitment resonated with the residents of Vikaspuri, where he triumphed in the recent election with an impressive margin of 13,364 votes over his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) rival, Mahindra Yadav.
