Vaishali: Purnia MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav has come under the Election Commission’s scrutiny after distributing cash to families in Vaishali district, raising questions over potential violations of the election code of conduct.
Following the announcement of the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, the code of conduct came into effect across the state. On Thursday, Yadav visited Ganiyari village, located under the Sahadoi police station, where he handed out financial assistance to families affected by riverbank erosion. Reports suggest around Rs 5 lakh was distributed among 80 families.
Under election rules, public representatives and political figures are prohibited from distributing cash, gifts, or other benefits during the period of the code of conduct, as such acts are considered attempts to sway voters.
Yadav defended his actions, saying the assistance was purely humanitarian. “My intention was not to influence anyone or break any rules. When people are being displaced, it is the duty of a leader to stand with them,” he told reporters.
