Patna: The Patna district administration has announced a large-scale drive to remove illegal encroachments along the banks of the Ganga river. Four concrete houses were demolished at Kangan Ghat in Patna City on Thursday. Preparations have been finalised to demolish all permanent and temporary structures built on government land from Digha to Collectorate Ghat.
Anticipating resistance, authorities have deployed a significant police presence to ensure the operation proceeds smoothly.
Crackdown on illegal constructions
Patna District Magistrate Chandrashekhar Singh has ordered the removal of encroachments from Digha to Kangan Ghat, asserting that the land belongs to the government and no private claims will be entertained. According to the Supreme Court of India and National Green Tribunal (NGT) directives, construction is prohibited on unsurveyed land along the Ganga. However, several illegal structures have sprung up in the area, prompting the administration’s decision to reclaim the land.
Heavy police deployment and revenue team oversight
To maintain order during the operation, magistrates, municipal corporation staff, and police personnel will be present. Revenue officials, including Amins, will oversee land measurements to resolve any disputes on the spot, ensuring that the process is completed without delay or interference.
Forest department to take over after eviction
Once the land is cleared, the forest department will construct a boundary wall and carry out plantation work to prevent future encroachments.
While similar anti-encroachment drives have been conducted along the Ganga in Patna before, this operation is expected to be the most extensive yet, aimed at permanently removing illegal occupants.
