Patna: A high-level committee constituted by the Central Government has begun an on-site inspection in Patna to assess the feasibility of runway expansion and improve aircraft landing safety at Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport.
The committee is currently examining the airport’s surrounding geographical conditions, existing obstructions and the possible requirement for additional land.
Additional Land Near Patna Zoo Under Assessment
According to sources, approximately 500 metres in length and 300 metres in width of additional land may be required towards the direction of the Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, commonly known as Patna Zoo.
A technical team is presently conducting a survey of the area as part of the assessment process.
Officials said the inspection was focused on improving operational safety and ensuring smoother aircraft landings at the airport.
Concerns Over ‘Hard Landings’
Patna Airport has frequently faced concerns related to “hard landings” due to:
- Limited runway length
- Congested surroundings
- Presence of tall structures near the airport
These factors have intensified discussions around enhancing aviation safety infrastructure and increasing landing efficiency.
Experts involved in the review reportedly believe that multiple technical modifications are necessary to make the runway approach area safer for aircraft operations.
Clock Tower Height Reduction Under Consideration
Sources said one of the proposals currently under serious consideration involves reducing the height of the Clock Tower located at the Old Secretariat.
Officials believe several tall structures surrounding the airport are creating obstacles for aircraft approach and landing operations.
Technical experts are evaluating multiple options to make the approach zone obstruction-free in accordance with international aviation safety standards.
Meetings Held With Airport and State Officials
The committee has been holding regular discussions with officials from the Airports Authority of India and the Bihar government.
According to sources, deliberations are underway regarding:
- Potential land acquisition
- Areas likely to be affected
- Alternative arrangements linked to the expansion proposal
Officials said that if the runway expansion plan proceeds, land acquisition in surrounding areas could become necessary.
