Patna: Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary Moves to Controversial Government Residence on Vijayadashami

Bihar Deputy CM Changes Residence, Avoids Path Taken by Tejashwi Yadav Patna: Bihar's Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has made a notable alteration at his new residence at 5 Deshratna Marg, just two days after moving in on Vijayadashami. The gate previously used by former Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav has been permanently closed, with a boundary being constructed around it. This decision comes amid ongoing discussions about the "Vastu Dosh" associated with the bungalow, as none of the former Deputy CMs who stayed here managed to complete their tenure. Questions have arisen about whether this is a coincidence or if the bungalow truly has a Vastu-related defect. The residence has seen several Deputy CMs over the past decade—Tejashwi Yadav twice, Sushil Kumar Modi, and Tarkishore Prasad—none of whom completed their full terms in office. Despite this, Tejashwi has maintained a particular fondness for the bungalow, where he had lavish renovations done, including imported granite and chandeliers. Responding to the Vastu Dosh claims, RJD spokesperson Ejaz Ahmed criticized the decision to close the gate, accusing the Deputy CM of promoting confusion and superstition. He suggested that the move reflected a lack of self-confidence in both the Deputy CM and his political stance. Samrat Choudhary dismissed the notion of a curse on the residence, stating that people, not the bungalow, are the issue. He indirectly referred to Tejashwi Yadav, with whom the bungalow has become closely associated. Choudhary emphasized that the bungalow is not a problem for him, further mentioning that his focus is not on securing the Deputy CM position again in the future. Over the past decade, the residence has become infamous for its history of incomplete tenures. Despite Tejashwi’s best efforts to make the residence luxurious, including his first stay in 2015, he has yet to complete a full term there. This association with unfinished tenures has fueled the perception of the bungalow being unlucky for its residents. Sushil Kumar Modi, who moved into the bungalow in 2017 after Tejashwi, famously criticized the extravagant spending on its renovation. Modi remarked that even the Prime Minister’s residence pales in comparison to the lavish interior of 5 Deshratna Marg. He later vacated the bungalow without completing his term, reinforcing the ongoing myth surrounding the residence. Tejashwi, however, had been reluctant to leave the bungalow and was eventually forced to vacate it by court order in 2017, following accusations of misuse of government funds for personal luxury. This led to political confrontations, and the residence continues to be a point of contention in Bihar’s political circles.

Patna: Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary has officially shifted to the government residence at 5 Deshratna Marg on the occasion of Vijayadashami. This bungalow has been a subject of much political controversy, especially during the tenure of former Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav. Allegations have surfaced claiming that Tejashwi removed various items from the residence, including taps and air conditioners, before vacating it. His time in the bungalow saw a staggering expenditure of crores on interior decoration.

Tejashwi Yadav, who first moved into the bungalow in 2015, reportedly ordered granite from Spain and chandeliers from Jaipur, spending an estimated ₹5 crores on its interior. Despite the luxurious setup, Tejashwi never completed his term in the residence, a pattern that has persisted for every Deputy CM who has stayed at 5 Deshratna Marg. In 2017, when the Mahagathbandhan government collapsed, Tejashwi was asked to vacate the bungalow for the new Deputy CM, Sushil Kumar Modi, sparking a political battle.

Sushil Modi, upon moving into the residence, criticized the extravagant spending, claiming it exceeded that of even the Prime Minister’s residence. He highlighted the installation of 44 air conditioners, some even in bathrooms, and luxury furniture worth lakhs. Modi alleged that Tejashwi had misused government funds to transform the bungalow into what he described as a “five-star hotel.”

In 2017, Tejashwi vacated the bungalow following a court order that imposed a fine of ₹50,000 on him. However, when he left, several items, including taps, geysers, and air conditioners, were allegedly missing. This prompted further accusations, with posters appearing in Patna labeling Tejashwi as a “tap thief.”

Tejashwi responded to the allegations, claiming that they were baseless and politically motivated. He stated that everything had been recorded and that he had handed over the video footage to the Building Construction Department. He also mentioned plans to take legal action against those making the allegations.

The residence at 5 Deshratna Marg remains shrouded in controversy, with no Deputy CM being able to complete their term while staying there. The ongoing political tussle surrounding the bungalow continues to fuel tensions in Bihar’s political landscape.
