Patna: Thousands of residents in Patna’s Diara region are set to benefit from a new steamer service inaugurated by Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Tuesday at Fakkad Mahto Ghat in Nasriganj.

The service is expected to provide a safer and more reliable alternative to the small boats that have long been the primary mode of transport across the Ganges for residents of the riverine villages.

The inauguration was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, Cooperation Minister Ram Kripal Yadav, MLC Anamika Singh Patel, and other public representatives and administrative officials.

Free Travel For Seven Panchayats

According to the state government, the service will benefit residents of Akilpur in Saran district, along with the Ganghara, Purani Panapur, Manas, Hetanpur, Patlapur and Kasimchak panchayats in Danapur block.

Residents of these seven panchayats will be able to use the steamer free of charge.

Capacity Of 200 Passengers

Officials said the newly introduced steamer can carry up to 200 passengers on a single trip.

It is expected to operate around eight services daily, providing regular connectivity between Patna and the Diara region from morning until evening.

The government said the service is expected to benefit students, office-goers, farmers and patients who travel frequently between the villages and the city.

Safer Alternative To Overloaded Boats

Until now, residents of the Diara region have largely depended on small private boats to cross the Ganges.

Locals have frequently complained of overcrowding, irregular fares and safety concerns, particularly during the monsoon when rising river levels make crossings more hazardous.

Several boating accidents have been reported in recent years, including one in which a teacher lost his life after drowning in the Ganges.

Expected Boost To Local Economy

Residents believe the steamer service will improve not only daily commuting but also economic activity in the region.

Farmers are expected to find it easier to transport agricultural produce to Patna markets, while improved connectivity is also likely to benefit students, employees and patients who travel to the city for education, work and healthcare.

The state government said the initiative is aimed at strengthening transport links between Patna and its riverine communities while making travel safer and more accessible for thousands of people living along the Ganges.
