Patna: A major tragedy unfolded in Patna on Tuesday morning after four people, including three teenagers, drowned in the Ganga River near Gandhi Ghat.
Authorities confirmed that the bodies of three victims had been recovered, while search operations were continuing for another missing teenager.
The deceased were identified as:
- Chandan Kumar (35)
- Amit (15)
- Samar
Rescue teams were continuing their search for 17-year-old Joy.
Group Drifted Into Deep Water
According to police, the group had gone to bathe in the Ganga at Gandhi Ghat, which falls under the jurisdiction of Pirbahore Police Station.
While bathing, the teenagers reportedly drifted into deeper waters and began drowning.
Witnesses said Chandan Kumar jumped into the river in an attempt to rescue them but also drowned during the effort.
An SDRF team was later deployed to carry out rescue and recovery operations in the river.
Families Left Devastated
The incident triggered scenes of grief and panic at the ghat, where relatives of the victims gathered following news of the drowning.
Officials said Amit and Joy were cousins and both studied in Class IX.
Ranjit Kumar reportedly collapsed in shock after learning about the deaths.
He told officials that his son, nephew and two of their friends had drowned in the river after leaving home earlier in the morning without informing family members.
Search Operation Underway
Police confirmed that the bodies of Amit, Samar and Chandan Kumar had been recovered.
However, the search for Joy was still continuing till late afternoon.
According to eyewitness accounts, the teenagers ventured too far into deep waters while bathing in the Ganges.
Authorities said the young man who attempted to rescue them also lost his life during the incident.
Police and SDRF personnel remained at the site as rescue operations continued.
