Patna: Authorities in Patna are building a substantial embankment to protect a four-lane road along the Ganges, running parallel to the JP Ganga Path from Gaighat to Didarganj, from seasonal flooding.
Construction east of Khajekalan Ghat is progressing swiftly, with workers reporting that the reinforced concrete wall will be 20 metres thick and feature a strong base designed to withstand rising river levels. The road, which runs adjacent to the embankment, is frequently submerged during the monsoon, prompting authorities to suspend traffic for over a month in some years and causing soil erosion along sections of the riverbank.
As part of the project, trees obstructing construction have been removed with permission from the Forest Department. Officials said additional trees will be cut down, but new saplings will be planted once the road is completed.
The embankment is expected to serve as a protective barrier, allowing the riverside route to remain operational even during periods of high water, a critical development for traffic and flood management in the city.
