Patna: Bihar’s capital city, Patna, is set to roll out ‘Mission Total Segregation’ from September 19, aimed at improving waste management by segregating wet and dry waste at the household level. The Urban Development and Housing Minister, Nitin Nabin, announced the initiative, which will be inaugurated by the Governor of Bihar.

According to Minister Nabin, Patna generates around 1,600 tonnes of waste daily, and the city corporation has acquired 80 acres of land to establish a segregation processing unit. “We are awaiting clearance from the central government, after which the tender will be issued and construction will begin within the next two months,” he said.

A meeting was held by Minister Nitin Nabin to discuss the mission, with officials from the Municipal Corporation, including Mayor Sita Sahu, in attendance.

As part of the campaign, 375 teams have been formed to visit households and raise awareness about waste segregation. A three-day training workshop will be held for the teams, and ‘Swachhata Ambassadors’ will also be appointed to drive the initiative. Schools, both government and private, will be engaged in the campaign, and meetings will be organized with shopkeepers’ associations, hotels, restaurants, and hospitals to involve the broader community.

Municipal Commissioner Animesh Kumar Parashar emphasized that the first phase of the mission will focus on raising awareness until December. “After that, we will begin collecting wet and dry waste separately from households,” he said. The corporation will not only manage the collection but also ensure the proper segregation and processing of the waste.

The establishment of the waste segregation plant is part of the city’s efforts to improve its ranking in the national cleanliness survey. “Properly segregated waste is essential for the plant’s operations, and this mission is crucial to making the system effective,” Parashar added.

The mission aims to create a cleaner and more sustainable Patna through community participation and efficient waste management practices.
