Patna : Grocery prices in Patna have risen ahead of the festive season, with rice and pulses becoming costlier in the city’s retail markets over the past month.
The price increase has been reported across several varieties of rice and pulses. Urad dal has recorded the sharpest rise, increasing from Rs 120 to Rs 150 per kg, while the price of medium-quality rice has crossed Rs 65 per kg.
Rice Prices Rise By Up To Rs 20
Medium-quality rice, which was selling at around Rs 48 per kg a month ago, is now priced at more than Rs 65 per kg in Patna’s grocery market.
Prices vary depending on the variety and quality. Some higher-quality rice varieties have reached Rs 130 per kg.
Traders said most major categories of rice have witnessed an upward trend over the past month.
Pulses Also Become Costlier
Prices of several commonly consumed pulses have also increased.
Arhar dal has risen from Rs 120 to around Rs 140 per kg, while chana dal has increased from Rs 80 to Rs 100 per kg. Masoor dal has also moved up from Rs 80 to Rs 100 per kg.
Urad dal has seen the biggest increase, with its price rising Rs 30 from Rs 120 to Rs 150 per kg.
The price of moong dal, however, has remained stable at around Rs 120 per kg.
Higher Import Costs Affect Chana Prices
Ramesh Chandra Talreja, general secretary of the Bihar Retail Grocery Wholesalers Association, said demand for pulses is currently high as the consumption season continues.
He attributed the increase in prices to lower production and higher import costs affecting tur and other pulses.
Talreja said the higher cost of importing chana from Canada has also affected the prices of chana and chana dal in the domestic market. Weather-related conditions have also affected pulse production, he said.
Festival Demand May Keep Prices Under Pressure
According to Talreja, demand for pulses is expected to increase further during the festive season.
This could put additional pressure on the prices of tur dal and other pulses in the coming days.
He urged the government to release pulses available in buffer stocks more quickly. Increased market supply, he said, could help control prices and ease pressure on consumers.
