Patna : A heritage walk will be organised in Patna on Sunday, November 1, to familiarise participants with Mahatma Gandhi’s historical association with the city and his contribution to India’s freedom movement.
Organised by Bapu Tower and Planet Patna, the two-hour walk will begin at 7 am from Bapu Tower in Gardanibagh. Participants will visit seven historical locations associated with Gandhi, learning about significant events, personalities and institutions connected with his visits to Patna.
The walk will cover Bapu Tower, Rajendra Smriti Museum, Bihar Vidyapeeth, Sadakat Ashram, Gandhi Kutir, Gandhi Museum and Gandhi Maidan before concluding at Gandhi Ghat on the banks of the Ganga.
The initiative aims to connect residents with Patna’s historical heritage and highlight the role of its landmarks in the freedom movement.
Rajendra Smriti Museum And Bihar Vidyapeeth
The heritage walk will begin at Bapu Tower before proceeding to the Rajendra Smriti Museum, located within the historic Bihar Vidyapeeth campus.
The museum showcases the life and contributions of Dr Rajendra Prasad, independent India’s first President and one of Mahatma Gandhi’s close associates. The visit will provide participants with an opportunity to learn about the relationship between the two leaders and their contributions to the national movement.
The next stop will be Bihar Vidyapeeth, which Gandhi inaugurated in 1921 to promote indigenous education and nationalist ideals during the freedom struggle.
The institution emerged as part of the broader movement to develop an education system rooted in Indian traditions and free from colonial influence.
Sadakat Ashram And Gandhi Kutir
From Bihar Vidyapeeth, participants will proceed to Sadakat Ashram, the headquarters of the Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee.
The ashram holds an important place in Bihar’s political history and is associated with leaders and activities connected with the freedom movement.
The fourth destination will be Gandhi Kutir, where Mahatma Gandhi stayed during his visits to Patna. The site offers a glimpse into his association with the city and the historical events linked to his visits.
These locations will help participants understand the institutions, people and places that shaped Patna’s role in the national movement.
Gandhi Museum To Showcase His Life And Philosophy
The fifth stop will be the Gandhi Museum, which houses a collection of photographs, personal letters, original writings and everyday objects associated with Gandhi’s life and work.
The museum preserves historical material relating to his teachings, public activities and philosophy. Its collection offers visitors an opportunity to explore the ideas and principles that influenced Gandhi’s approach to social reform and the struggle for independence.
The visit is expected to add historical context to the walk by connecting the locations with documentary records and material associated with Gandhi.
Gandhi Maidan And Gandhi Ghat To Complete The Walk
The final two stops will be Gandhi Maidan and Gandhi Ghat.
Gandhi Maidan has served as a major venue for public gatherings and important events in Patna’s history. Its association with political meetings and public movements makes it a significant landmark in the city’s historical landscape.
The walk will conclude at Gandhi Ghat, situated on the banks of the Ganga. The ghat is associated with the immersion of Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes following his assassination in 1948.
After visiting all seven locations, participants will return to Bapu Tower, completing the approximately two-hour programme.
Heritage Walk To Highlight Patna’s Historical Legacy
By bringing together seven landmarks associated with Gandhi and the freedom movement, the heritage walk seeks to offer participants a broader understanding of Patna’s historical significance.
The initiative also highlights the importance of preserving the city’s cultural heritage and making historical knowledge accessible to residents, students and younger generations.
Through the walk, Bapu Tower and Planet Patna aim to encourage greater engagement with the people, institutions and events that have shaped the city’s identity.
