Patna : A trial run of travelators and escalators has begun at the new underground subway near Patna Junction, a move aimed at easing chronic congestion in the area. The trial will last 15 days, with final construction and finishing works expected to be completed by the end of April. The project is part of a broader initiative to integrate the area into a newly built multi-modal transport hub, slated for inauguration in May.
According to Animesh Kumar Parashar, Managing Director of Patna Smart City, the project is being executed by the Bihar Bridge Construction Corporation and is now in its final stages. “From travelators to access facilities, all key components are nearly complete and undergoing checks by a dedicated security audit agency,” he said.
Multi-modal hub to transform traffic flow
The new multi-modal hub, located near GPO Golambar, is expected to significantly streamline urban mobility. It will house dedicated parking and boarding facilities for buses, auto-rickshaws, taxis, and private vehicles. City buses will also operate from the terminal, making it a key node in Patna’s emerging urban transport network.
The adjoining subway connects Patna Junction with major nearby landmarks such as Mahavir Mandir and Buddha Smriti Park, offering a safer and more efficient route for pedestrians. The 440-metre-long corridor features four 148-metre travelators, two escalators, and two lifts—located at Mahavir Mandir and the multi-level parking site. It is also equipped with a heat ventilation and air-conditioning system to ensure commuter comfort.
Three access gates have been constructed at strategic points near the multi-modal hub, Buddha Smriti Park, and the multi-level parking facility to facilitate movement.
