Patna: Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation (BUIDCO) carried out a joint drainage operation across the city after nearly 51 mm of continuous rainfall between Friday midnight and around 11 am on Saturday, July 11. Officials said the coordinated effort enabled the timely removal of accumulated rainwater from major roads, residential colonies, commercial areas and most localities within the municipal limits.

The operation was supervised by Urban Development and Housing Department Secretary and BUIDCO Managing Director Animesh Kumar Parashar and Patna Municipal Commissioner Yashpal Meena.

Senior Officials Conduct Field Inspection

Parashar and Meena conducted joint inspections of key drainage pumping stations (sump houses) and waterlogging-prone locations, including Saidpur, Yogipur, Ashok Nagar, Mandiri and Gosai Tola.

During the inspections, they reviewed the functioning of the drainage system and directed engineers and field personnel to ensure that all pumping stations operated at full capacity.

Quick Response Teams Deployed Overnight

PMC said all 19 Quick Response Teams remained deployed throughout the night to monitor and address waterlogging across the city. Senior officials coordinated field operations to ensure faster drainage in affected areas.

The civic body also responded to reports of a fallen tree near Haj Bhawan during the rain. Officials said the obstruction was removed promptly, allowing traffic movement to resume without prolonged disruption.

Drainage Completed in Several Localities

According to the Municipal Corporation, drainage operations were completed in several parts of the city, including the Secretariat, LNJP Hospital, Punaichak, Kesari Nagar, Karbigahiya, Gandhi Maidan, Machhli Gali, Lalji Tola, Khetan Market, Khazanchi Road (Dashratha Colony), Rajendra Nagar Road No. 2, Panchvati Nagar, RK Avenue Road, Vachaspati Nagar, Patliputra Sports Complex, Jay Prabha Medanta, Muslim Tola, Srinagar, Dhelwa Bagicha, Marufganj, Har Mandir Gali, Gulzarbagh Station area, Nawab Bahadur Road, Ashok Rajpath, NMCH Road, Pathan Toli, Sonalika Nagar, Paijawa Dagar and Nav Vihar Colony.

Officials said drainage work continues at a few locations where site conditions have slowed the process.

In the Rajendra Nagar Terminal area, pumps are being used to remove water because of ongoing metro construction and the comparatively lower road elevation. Additional pumps have also been deployed in low-lying areas, including Bargad ka Akhada in Ward 60.

Pumping Stations Operated Without Interruption

Throughout the rainfall, municipal teams removed plastic waste, floating debris and other blockages from drains and catch pits to maintain the flow of rainwater.

BUIDCO said all Drainage Pumping Stations operated continuously at full capacity during the rainfall.

The corporation reported the following operational infrastructure across its zones:

  • Azimabad Zone: 7 drainage pumping stations with 33 pumps (30 electric and 3 diesel)
  • Kankarbagh Zone: 7 drainage pumping stations with 46 pumps (41 electric and 6 diesel)
  • Bankipur Zone: 7 drainage pumping stations with 35 pumps (29 electric and 6 diesel)
  • Patliputra Zone: 9 drainage pumping stations with 36 pumps (29 electric and 7 diesel)
  • Nutan Rajdhani Zone: 26 drainage pumping stations with 105 pumps (95 electric and 10 diesel)

Officials said additional power feeders have been provided at all pumping stations to ensure uninterrupted operations during power outages. Diesel generator sets have also been kept on standby at every sump house.

Real-Time Monitoring Through Command Centre

Under Patna Smart City Limited’s Automation of Drainage Pumping Stations project, nine major sump houses were monitored in real time through the Integrated Control and Command Centre (ICCC).

The monitored facilities included pumping stations at Saidpur, Yogipur, the Eco Park complex, three stations in the Pahari area and the Pahari NBCC sump house.

Officials said the system enabled continuous monitoring of water levels, pump operations and overall station performance, allowing faster operational decisions when required.

Authorities Remain on High Alert

The Patna Municipal Corporation and BUIDCO said they are continuously monitoring weather forecasts issued by the India Meteorological Department.

Officials said all Quick Response Teams, engineers, sanitation workers and drainage pumping station operators remain on alert to respond immediately if further rainfall leads to emergency situations.
