Patna : With the water level of the Ganga continuing to fall in Patna, the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has intensified a special cleaning campaign at the city’s major riverfront ghats.

Municipal Commissioner Yashpal Meena has directed teams to carry out deep cleaning across the Ganga wards. The civic body is monitoring the water level and undertaking cleaning work in phases according to the conditions at individual ghats.

The special campaign is currently underway at JP Setu, Pati Pul, Minar Ghat, Collectorate Ghat, Mangal Talab, Bhadr Ghat, Nauzar Ghat and Damarahi, among other locations.

Waste And Silt Removed From Ghats

Sanitation workers are manually collecting and removing waste accumulated at the ghats. The ghat premises and surrounding areas are also being cleaned and organised.

At Digha cremation ghat, Patthar Ghat and other locations, workers are removing silt and soil deposited on the surface after the river water receded.

Workers are using spades and other equipment to clear the accumulated silt, with the aim of improving access to the ghats and maintaining sanitation.

Cleaning Being Conducted In Two Shifts

PMC is conducting cleaning operations at major ghats in two shifts every day.

An average of two to three sanitation workers have been deployed at each ghat. Additional workers and resources are being assigned depending on the volume of work and local requirements.

During the special cleaning drive on Tuesday, around 3 tonnes of waste and silt were removed from various ghats.

The collected waste and silt are being lifted and disposed of according to prescribed procedures.

Fogging And Anti-Larval Spraying Continue

Along with the cleaning work, PMC teams are carrying out fogging and anti-larval spraying at the ghats and nearby areas.

The measures are intended to prevent mosquito breeding in places where water may remain stagnant following the fall in the river level.

Municipal teams are also inspecting sensitive areas around the ghats to identify and address waterlogging, accumulated waste and silt.

Pumps To Address Waterlogging Near Patthar Ghat

The area near Patthar Ghat faces waterlogging when rising river levels cause water to accumulate on the road and in low-lying areas towards the southern side.

To address the issue, PMC is coordinating with the Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation (BUIDCO) for the installation of pumps.

The pumping arrangements are intended to facilitate drainage. Cleaning and sanitation work will follow once the accumulated water is removed and normal conditions are restored.

Focus On Ghats Ahead Of Festival Season

The civic body has accelerated the cleaning work ahead of the upcoming festivals, when the movement of devotees and residents at Ganga ghats is expected to increase.

PMC said the objective is to ensure that people visiting the ghats during the festival period have access to a clean, safe and better-maintained environment.

The special cleaning campaign, along with waste and silt removal, fogging and anti-larval measures, will continue according to the water level and requirements at different ghats.
