Patna: Travelling between Patna and Muzaffarpur could become much faster in the coming years, with Bihar moving ahead with the initial planning of a proposed Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor via Hajipur.
The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has reportedly begun work on the Alternative Analysis Report (AAR) and Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed corridor. The project aims to develop a semi-high-speed regional transport network connecting Patna, Hajipur and Muzaffarpur.
If implemented as planned, the corridor could reduce the journey time between Patna and Muzaffarpur to less than an hour. However, the route, construction timeline and operational schedule have not yet been finalised.
NCRTC Begins Route and Passenger Study
According to the report, an NCRTC team began preliminary work approximately a week ago to assess the feasibility of the proposed corridor.
The initial study will examine passenger demand, travel patterns and the areas likely to generate the highest number of commuters. These findings will help determine the most suitable alignment and locations for stations.
The analysis will also consider where stops would best serve daily commuters travelling between the three cities.
Rather than deciding the route solely on the basis of distance, the study will seek to identify a corridor that meets passenger needs while remaining technically and economically viable.
Trains Could Reach Speeds of 160 Kmph
The proposed RRTS is envisaged as a semi-high-speed regional transport service, distinct from conventional passenger trains and urban metro systems.
According to the project details cited in the report, the trains could have a maximum design speed of 160 kmph, with an average operating speed of around 100 kmph.
These speeds could allow passengers to cover the approximately 80–120 km distance, depending on the final route, in around an hour or less.
The actual journey time will depend on the final alignment, station spacing, operational speed and the number of stops.
Patna–Muzaffarpur Travel Time Could Fall Sharply
At present, journeys between Patna and Muzaffarpur can take approximately 1.5 to two hours, depending on the mode of transport, route and traffic conditions.
A dedicated rapid rail corridor could significantly reduce travel time and make regular commuting easier for people travelling between the two cities.
Potential beneficiaries include office-goers, students, businesspeople and other passengers who frequently travel between Patna, Hajipur and Muzaffarpur.
Faster regional connectivity could also make it more convenient for residents to access educational institutions, employment opportunities and commercial centres across the corridor.
RRTS May Connect With Metro, Railway Stations and Bus Services
The project planning will also examine opportunities to integrate the proposed RRTS with existing public transport networks.
Potential connections with railway stations, bus terminals, Patna Metro and other transport services could make transfers easier for passengers.
Such integration would be important for commuters travelling beyond the main RRTS stations, allowing them to combine regional rail journeys with local public transport.
The final integration plan will depend on the route selected and the feasibility of connecting the different transport systems.
AAR and DPR to Assess Cost, Land and Construction Options
The AAR will compare possible route alternatives and assess their suitability based on passenger demand, technical feasibility and other planning considerations.
The subsequent DPR will provide a more detailed framework for the project, including the proposed alignment, station locations, land requirements, construction methods, estimated costs and implementation arrangements.
These studies will help authorities evaluate the project’s feasibility before decisions are taken on its execution.
Bihar Cabinet Approved Rs 31.59 Crore for RRTS Studies
The Bihar Cabinet approved the preparation of AARs and DPRs for four proposed RRTS corridors in July, according to the report.
The approval included a budget of Rs 31.59 crore for preparing the technical and planning reports.
The proposed Patna–Hajipur–Muzaffarpur corridor is among the regional connectivity projects being examined. NCRTC’s involvement in preparing the reports marks a step towards evaluating the corridor’s route and feasibility.
The approval to prepare these reports does not, by itself, mean that construction has begun or that a commissioning date has been announced.
Proposed Sonpur Airport Connectivity May Also Be Examined
The proposed corridor could become an important transport link between Patna, Hajipur and Muzaffarpur, three significant population and economic centres in Bihar.
The possibility of connecting the corridor with the proposed Sonpur airport may also be considered in future planning, although such a link would depend on the final route and subsequent approvals.
If the project advances through the planning and implementation stages, it could strengthen regional mobility and support economic activity across the corridor.
When Will Patna–Muzaffarpur Rapid Rail Start?
The project is currently at the planning and feasibility stage, with NCRTC tasked with preparing the AAR and DPR.
The final route, station locations, construction schedule and date of commencement of services have not yet been confirmed in the information available.
For now, the prospect of a sub-one-hour journey between Patna and Muzaffarpur remains a proposed project outcome rather than an operational guarantee. Further progress will depend on the findings of the technical studies and the decisions taken by the authorities.
