Patna: Police in Patna have said a NEET aspirant found dead at a girls’ hostel earlier this month died by suicide, citing a post-mortem report that confirmed hanging as the cause of death and the recovery of a suicide note from the room.
The student’s body was discovered on January 6 at Perfect Girls Hostel on CP Thakur Road, under the Gandhi Maidan police station area. She was from Goh in Aurangabad district and had been preparing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) in Patna. The incident sparked concern among residents and students in the area.
Briefing reporters on Wednesday, SP (City, West) Diksha said officers reached the spot immediately after receiving information and sent the body for post-mortem examination. A forensic science laboratory (FSL) team inspected the room and collected evidence, including the suicide note, a mobile phone and other materials, all of which are being examined.
Police said an accused student has been arrested following a complaint by the deceased’s family. He is alleged to have mentally harassed the student. Investigators said the two were in contact and that the accused had visited the hostel previously.
The inquiry is also proceeding on technical lines, with the suicide note sent for forensic analysis and call detail records and chat logs under scrutiny. Initial findings suggest the student had been under significant academic stress in the days leading up to her death, a point also conveyed by family members, police said.
According to investigators, the accused is from Purnea and was allegedly persistently harassing the student. Police added that a subsequent complaint filed by the student’s father names the hostel owner, the warden and one of the student’s friends, alleging mental harassment. Those allegations are being examined separately, officials said.
