Patna: An alleged criminal was shot and arrested by police following an exchange of fire on Sunday morning near PMCH along the JP Ganga Path in Patna, officers said.
According to police, the suspect opened fire when officers attempted to detain him. The police returned fire in what they described as self-defence, injuring him in the leg. He was taken into custody and admitted to hospital for treatment.
The man has been identified as Amit Kumar, a resident of Hajipur in Vaishali district. Police officials said four criminal cases, including charges under the Arms Act and attempt to murder, are already registered against him in Vaishali and Patna.
Senior officers, including City SP Mamta Kalyani, DSP Town and personnel from Pirbahore police station and the district intelligence unit, reached the scene after the incident. A forensic science team was also called to examine the site.
Police said they had received intelligence that Amit Kumar was planning to carry out a crime. After tracking his location, a team moved in to intercept him. “On seeing the police, he fired at the team,” an officer said, adding that the retaliatory shot struck him in the leg.
Investigators also linked Kumar to an earlier incident on January 28 at the civil court premises. Police allege that he had arrived there with an associate, Piyush, intending to kill Tatiya, an accused said to be associated with the Subodh Singh gang, who had come for a court appearance.
While Piyush was detained during routine checking at the court gate, Kumar managed to flee, police said. During questioning, Piyush allegedly told officers that Kumar had brought him to the court on a motorcycle from Vaishali.
