Patna: A man wanted in several serious criminal cases was injured and arrested following a late-night police encounter in the Khagaul area on the outskirts of Patna, police said on Friday.
The suspect, identified as Manager Rai, a resident of Didarganj, sustained a gunshot wound to his leg during an exchange of fire with police near Lakh Par under the Khagaul police station area. He was taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Patna for treatment and remains under police custody.
According to police officials, the incident took place at around 3 am after officers received intelligence that Rai, who had been absconding for a long period, was present in the area. A police team moved in to cordon off the location, at which point the suspect allegedly opened fire.
Police returned fire, injuring Rai and bringing the situation under control, officials said. He was arrested at the scene.
A country-made firearm, two spent cartridges, and a scooter were recovered from the site of the encounter, police added. The area witnessed a brief panic following the gunfire, but the situation was quickly stabilised.
Police sources said Rai faces at least eight cases registered at Khagaul police station alone and is accused in more than a dozen criminal cases, including murder, extortion, and robbery. He is also an accused in the 2022 murder of Dr Mohammad Anwar Alam in the same area.
The city superintendent of police (west), Bhanu Pratap Singh, visited the spot after the incident and reviewed the operation. Officials said further investigation and questioning of the accused could lead to information about his criminal network and associates.
Police patrols in the area have been intensified, and legal proceedings are underway.
