Patna: A short circuit at a government girls’ residential school in Patna’s Athmagola area caused a fire on Saturday morning, leaving eight students unconscious after they inhaled heavy smoke. All were first taken to the Athmagola Community Health Centre (CHC) and later referred to the Barh subdivisional hospital for further treatment.
The incident occurred at the Government OBC Girls Residential +2 High School, located under the Athmagola police station in Barh subdivision. According to staff, the blaze began in the rear quarters of the school, quickly filling the building with smoke.
‘Students were trapped inside before firefighters rescued them’
Witnesses said several students were caught inside classrooms when the fire broke out.
Fire brigade teams reached the campus promptly and managed to control the flames. Firefighters then rescued the trapped students, ensuring no major injuries beyond smoke inhalation.
One teacher said the incident created chaos within minutes:
“The fire started due to a short circuit. The girls panicked as smoke spread, and several of them fainted before they could be brought out.”
Police teams also arrived at the school to assist with evacuation and investigation.
‘All students are stable,’ says principal
School principal Vibha Kumari confirmed that the affected students were admitted to the CHC for immediate care.
She added that while the number of students who fainted may yet be updated, the condition of all hospitalised girls is currently stable.
“The girls fell unconscious due to smoke inhalation. They were treated quickly, and doctors have said their condition is not critical,” Kumari stated.
Electrical faults under lens
Local authorities are now examining the cause of the short circuit, as well as safety lapses in the residential facility. Parents and residents have demanded a thorough inspection of electrical wiring in hostels across the region.
