Patna: A suspected gangster was shot and injured during an encounter with Bihar Police’s Special Task Force (STF) in Patna on Wednesday, officials said.
The accused, identified as Rajiv Kumar, also known as Surya Don, was located in the Gaighat area following intelligence inputs that he was allegedly planning a major crime. Acting on the information, STF personnel cordoned off the locality.
According to police, Surya opened fire with a pistol when he realised he was surrounded. STF personnel returned fire, and around three rounds were exchanged. One bullet struck Kumar in the leg, causing him to fall to the ground. He was subsequently apprehended and taken to hospital for treatment.
Police said a pistol was recovered from the scene. Additional forces were deployed in Gaighat and a search operation was launched following the exchange of fire.
Surya, a resident of the Khajekala police station area, is wanted in more than 24 cases, including robbery, dacoity, illegal arms possession, fraud and liquor smuggling. Officials said he had been on the STF’s radar for some time.
The incident marks the fifth reported police encounter in Bihar in 2026. In January, police were involved in separate encounters with alleged criminals including Parmanand Yadav, Nitish Yadav and Manager Rai.
Senior officers said operations against organised crime would continue, adding that the STF was maintaining pressure on individuals with pending warrants and serious criminal records.
