Patna: A 17-year-old school student has died after falling from the roof of a coaching centre in the Phulwarisharif area of Patna, in the eastern Indian state of Bihar. The incident, which took place near AIIMS Golambar in Hari Nagar Colony on Thursday morning, has sparked protests from her family, who allege that she was murdered.
Police said officers were alerted shortly after the teenager was found on the road outside the building. She was taken into custody by authorities and later sent for a postmortem examination. The circumstances leading to her fall remain unclear, and investigators have said they are examining whether the death was accidental, suicidal or the result of a crime.
CCTV footage from inside the coaching centre shows the student climbing the stairs towards the rooftop. Two young men can be seen walking behind her in the recording. While police have not confirmed any wrongdoing, the footage has fuelled suspicion among the girl’s relatives, who have questioned the sequence of events and demanded a thorough inquiry.
The student has been identified as Pinki Kumari, a resident of Phulwarisharif. According to her family, she left home around 8 am to attend classes and they were informed of her death roughly an hour later. Her relatives have alleged that she was sexually assaulted and then pushed from the fourth floor of the building. They claim injury marks were visible on her body and that her slippers were found at the scene.
Police officials said coaching centre staff and local residents are being questioned and that forensic evidence is being reviewed. “All aspects are under investigation,” an officer said, adding that conclusions would be drawn only after the postmortem and further examination of the CCTV footage.
