Patna: A major revision has been made to the Ganga water supply scheme in Patna, with the city now set to receive water through intake wells at 10 locations from Digha to Didarganj. The new plan aims to provide continuous water supply to 2.5 million residents, replacing the current system that extracts 350 million litres per day (MLD) from underground sources.
The change comes after concerns over the high cost of the previous project, which proposed a single large water treatment plant on the banks of the Ganga in Digha. The Water Resources Department has now opted for a revised plan, and a new Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared to assess costs.
24-Hour Water Supply for Patna
The revised scheme promises round-the-clock water supply, a significant upgrade from the current 11-hour service provided by the Patna Municipal Corporation. According to the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), Patna’s groundwater levels are depleting annually, and shifting to Ganga water will help curb over-extraction.
Filtration and Supply Process
Under the new scheme, 10 small water treatment plants will be installed between Digha and Didarganj, with intake wells at key locations including Digha, LCT Ghat, Gandhi Maidan, NIT, and Patna City. Ganga water will be drawn into these wells, filtered, and then supplied to households.
