Patna: Monsoon activity has intensified across Bihar, bringing a mix of light and heavy rainfall, with overnight downpours in Patna causing significant waterlogging. Areas outside Patna Junction, Kankarbagh, and Patna City are currently submerged under approximately two feet of water, severely disrupting daily commute for residents.
The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for 27 districts across the state for today, Monday, warning of potential lightning, thunder, and rain. Accompanying these conditions, strong winds are expected to blow at speeds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour. Authorities have advised residents in these districts to check weather updates before venturing out, urging caution during thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall. A drop of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in maximum temperatures is also anticipated, which could offer some respite from the heat.
Monsoon Deficit Persists Despite Recent Rains
Despite the recent spell of rain, Bihar continues to face a significant monsoon deficit. According to Meteorological Department data, the state has received an average of 258.0 mm of rainfall from June 1 to July 27, 2025, which is 43% less than the normal precipitation for this period. This indicates that drought-like conditions still prevail in most parts of the state. Gaya stands out as the only district to have received 20% more rainfall than normal.
Scientists at the Patna Meteorological Center attribute the increased activity to a new system forming in the Bay of Bengal. While light to moderate rain is expected in some areas over the next two to three days, the immediate forecast includes the possibility of heavy rainfall in isolated pockets.
Patna Forecast: Cloudy with Chances of Rain
The capital city, Patna, is also under a yellow alert for rain today. The city is expected to remain cloudy on Monday, with a likelihood of light rain and strong winds accompanied by thunder. The anticipated 2 to 3 degrees Celsius drop in maximum temperature should provide some relief from the prevailing humidity.
