Patna: Patna Women’s College (Autonomous), affiliated with Patna University, concluded a two-day workshop on “Biotechnology Techniques”, offering undergraduate and postgraduate students, along with research scholars, hands-on experience in some of the most widely used laboratory methods in modern biotechnology.
Held on 23–24 July 2026, the programme was designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and laboratory practice by introducing participants to molecular biology, microbiology, protein analysis and bioprocess technology through practical demonstrations and guided experiments.
The workshop was inaugurated by Principal Dr Sister M. Rashmi AC, Vice Principal Dr Sister M. Tanisha AC, Superior of Avila Convent Dr Sister Jincy AC, and Dean of the Faculty of Science Dr Bhawna Sinha, alongside faculty members of the college. Addressing participants, the dignitaries highlighted the importance of developing scientific aptitude, research skills and practical competence through experiential learning.
Hands-on training in modern biotechnology
The first day focused on core molecular biology and microbiology techniques that form the foundation of biotechnology research and industrial applications. Participants received practical training in DNA isolation, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and microbial culture inoculation for ethanol production, gaining first-hand experience with laboratory procedures commonly used in research laboratories.
On the second day, the emphasis shifted to protein analysis and bioprocess technology. Sessions introduced participants to the components and operation of bioreactors and fermenters, followed by practical exercises covering microbial growth kinetics, biomass estimation and product analysis.
Students also learned protein extraction techniques, SDS-PAGE gel casting, sample preparation, agarose gel electrophoresis, gel staining, destaining and band visualisation. These sessions provided practical insight into biomolecule separation and protein characterisation while familiarising participants with techniques routinely employed in biotechnology research, diagnostic laboratories and industrial settings.
Learning beyond the classroom
Faculty members from the Department of Biotechnology supervised both the theoretical and laboratory sessions, combining lectures, demonstrations and practical exercises to create an interactive learning environment.
According to the organisers, the integrated approach helped participants strengthen their understanding of molecular biology, microbiology, electrophoresis, protein analysis and bioprocess technology while reinforcing the connection between scientific theory and laboratory practice.
Participation from multiple institutions
The workshop was conducted under the leadership of Dr Arti Kumari, Head of the Department of Biotechnology, with support from Assistant Professors Dr Alok Ranjan, Dr Vivek Raj and Dr Premlata Kumari.
In addition to students from Patna Women’s College, participants attended from the College of Commerce, Arts & Science, Magadh Mahila College, Veer Kunwar Singh University, Patliputra University and Patna University, fostering academic collaboration across institutions.
Certificates awarded at valedictory session
The programme concluded with a valedictory session and certificate distribution ceremony attended by Dr Bhawna Sinha, Dean of the Faculty of Science, and Dr Arti Kumari.
Congratulating the participants, Dr Sinha praised their enthusiasm and active involvement throughout the workshop and encouraged them to continue strengthening their scientific and research capabilities through practical learning. Participation certificates were awarded to all registered attendees.
Through the initiative, the Department of Biotechnology at Patna Women’s College reaffirmed its commitment to promoting research-oriented education and experiential learning while equipping aspiring biotechnologists with practical skills essential for academic, research and professional careers.
