Patna: Over 600 students and academics from across India came together on April 21 to mark World Intellectual Property Day through a dynamic and informative online guest lecture on patent drafting and filing. The event, hosted by the Department of Botany and Department of Mathematics at Patna Women’s College, in collaboration with the Commerce and Management Club, was held under the Government of India’s National Intellectual Property Awareness Mission (NIPAM) 2.0.
The session, titled “Patent Drafting and Filing in India”, aimed to promote awareness of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and encourage a culture of innovation among students and faculty. Delivered by Dr Bharat N. Suryawanshi, Assistant Controller of Patents and Designs at the Patent Office in New Delhi and a NIPAM Officer, the lecture provided a deep dive into the technical and legal nuances of patenting in India.
Dr Suryawanshi, a senior Group A Gazetted Officer from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, brought clarity to a complex subject, offering practical insights into how individuals can protect their inventions. His lecture highlighted the strategic importance of patent rights in fostering a knowledge-based economy and empowering inventors to contribute meaningfully to national development.
Opening the session, Dr Shobha Srivastava, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Head of the Department of Zoology, underscored the global relevance of World Intellectual Property Day and its role in championing innovation. The event was smoothly moderated by Dr Urvashi Sinha, Assistant Professor in the Department of Botany, who kept the session engaging and accessible to the diverse audience.
A formal vote of thanks was delivered by Dr Piyush Kumar Rai, Assistant Professor in the Department of Botany, who also served as one of the coordinators of the event. He was joined in the organising efforts by Dr Ravi Kumar from the Department of Mathematics and Mr Gautam Saurabh, Assistant Professor in the Department of Commerce and Coordinator of the Commerce and Management Club. Their collaboration ensured a seamless experience for participants across disciplines and institutions.
Attendees included students and faculty from Patna Women’s College, Sciences College, Magadh Mahila College, B.N. College, and Allahabad University, demonstrating wide-ranging interest in intellectual property rights across academia.
