Patna: Patna Women’s College organised a webinar on Saturday to mark National Statistics Day. The event was held by the Department of Statistics along with the Department of Data Science and Analytics. The theme was “Statistical Literacy for a Data-Driven Society”. The day is celebrated every year in honour of Prof P.C. Mahalanobis, who laid the foundation of India’s modern statistical system.
The programme began with a welcome address by Dr Shobha Srivastava, Dean of the Faculty of Science. Dr Moon, Head of the Department of Statistics, introduced the theme and spoke about why learning statistics is important today. Three experts spoke in different sessions to guide students.
Prof Dr Arun Kumar Sinha spoke first. He explained the life and work of Prof Mahalanobis and why this year’s theme, “75 Years of Survey Sampling,” is important for India. In the second session, Prof Dr Amarendra Mishra said statistical knowledge should be taught in schools so that everyone can read data correctly. He gave real-life examples of how data is often misinterpreted.
In the third session, Dr Arun Kumar Kaushik from BHU explained how statistics and data science work together to solve real world problems. The event ended with a vote of thanks by Dr Priyadarshani Singh, Head of Data Science and Analytics.
