Patna: Patna Zoo is set to open its newly acquired white tiger to visitors from next week as part of a broader expansion of its animal collection through exchange programmes with zoos across the country.
The zoo has also received six Sangai deer, four white blackbucks, four rosy pelicans, four painted storks, two green iguanas and two silver pheasants, according to zoo officials.
White Tiger And Sangai Deer Join Zoo
The white tiger was acquired under an animal exchange programme and will be placed on public display next week.
The six Sangai deer brought from Delhi Zoo include two males and four females. The zoo has also received four white blackbucks, comprising two males and two females, along with rosy pelicans and painted storks.
Two Male Gaurs To Arrive From Karnataka
Zoo officials said two male gaurs are expected to arrive from Shivamogga Zoo in Karnataka by July 25 after receiving approval from the Central Zoo Authority.
Patna Zoo currently has two female gaurs. Officials said the arrival of the male animals is expected to support breeding efforts and help increase the gaur population at the zoo.
Green Iguanas To Be Displayed For The First Time
The zoo has also brought two green iguanas and two silver pheasants from Rohtak Zoo.
According to officials, the green iguanas will be exhibited at Patna Zoo for the first time. A dedicated glass enclosure measuring 20 by 30 feet has been constructed inside the reptile house to accommodate the reptiles.
Special Enclosure Designed For Iguanas
Zoo authorities said the enclosure has been designed to replicate the iguanas’ natural habitat.
It includes sturdy branches, a water fountain, rocks and vegetation to provide an environment suited to the species. Iguanas primarily feed on fruits, vegetables, leaves and insects.
Exchange Programme Aims To Diversify Collection
Officials said the latest arrivals are part of ongoing animal exchange programmes intended to improve species diversity and strengthen conservation and breeding efforts at Patna Zoo.
The addition of new species is also expected to enhance the visitor experience by introducing animals that have not previously been displayed at the zoo.
