Patna: The Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) in Patna is set for a transformative expansion, with the state government investing Rs 1,050 crore to develop the institute into one of eastern India’s premier super-speciality hospitals.

During a foundation stone-laying ceremony on Friday, Health Minister Mangal Pandey announced that a series of new facilities will be inaugurated in June, including a children’s cancer ward, two advanced operation theatres, a 20-bed Creative Care Medicine unit, state-of-the-art physiotherapy machines, and two dozen dialysis units.

The minister said the expansion reflects the joint vision of the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister to modernise the state’s healthcare services. “We are in the final phase of the rejuvenation plan. Rs 750 crore worth of projects are ready for launch next month, and another Rs 300 crore worth of approved schemes will follow soon,” Pandey added.

IGIMS currently has 1,700 hospital beds, and the new plans will double this capacity to 3,400. Additionally, the number of MBBS seats has increased to 150.

As part of the foundation event, Pandey also initiated the construction of a boundary wall, concrete roads, drainage systems, and a cable trench within the IGIMS campus, at a cost of Rs 16 crore. The event was presided over by Sanjeev Chaurasia, MLA of Digha, with senior officials including IGIMS Director Binde Kumar and Hospital Superintendent Manish Mandal in attendance.

Future projects include multi-level parking facilities worth Rs 76.47 crore, a Rs 96.36 crore lecture theatre, an MBBS student hostel at Rs 18.45 crore, and an eight-storey dental hospital costing Rs 91.70 crore.
