Patna : Authorities in Patna have allotted stalls to 150 street vendors as part of an effort to organise informal trade and provide designated vending spaces in the city’s Kadamkuan area.
The project, developed by the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC), aims to improve the livelihoods of street vendors while tackling issues such as congestion and encroachment. The first phase has now been completed, with a further 79 stalls set to be distributed in a second phase.
Vendors who have operated on the streets for years have been given designated stalls, with each paying a monthly rent of Rs1,000. Electricity and other utilities are included at no extra cost. The vending zone spans 22,000 square feet and is equipped with facilities such as drinking water and sanitation.
Animesh Kumar Parashar, Patna’s municipal commissioner, said the initiative was a step towards better urban management. “This project not only helps organise street vending but also aims to make the city more encroachment-free,” he said.
Local councillor Ashish Kumar Sinha said the vending zone would address long-standing issues faced by vendors. “Previously, they struggled with problems like traffic congestion and the lack of basic facilities. This initiative will provide them with a structured and more sustainable working environment,” he said.
The PMC has said it will take steps to ensure that vendors do not continue to operate on the roadside once allocated space in the vending zone, in a bid to reduce street clutter and improve urban aesthetics.
