Patna: Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday inaugurated the newly constructed building of the Government Urdu Library near Khazanchi Road on Ashok Rajpath, hailing it as a vital upgrade for students and researchers in the state.
The G+4 building, built at a cost of Rs 3.07 crore under the state plan, now offers enhanced space, better reading infrastructure, and modern amenities including upgraded furniture, digital lighting, and climate-controlled study rooms.
“This is a peaceful, well-equipped space for reading and research,” the Chief Minister said after inspecting the facility. “The new environment will certainly encourage students to study and think freely.”
Established in 1938, the Government Urdu Library has long served as a hub for language scholars and aspirants preparing for competitive exams. The library holds a multilingual collection of around 40,000 books in Urdu, Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Persian, and Arabic. Materials include NCERT books from Class 3 to 12, reference works in journalism, library science, and monthly magazines in three languages.
On average, 50–60 readers visit the library each day, with several researchers travelling from outside Bihar. The expanded facility, officials say, was built to accommodate growing demand for space and access to specialised resources.
Education Minister Sunil Kumar, who welcomed the Chief Minister with a book, noted the historical significance of the library, one of the few state-run Urdu institutions with a legacy stretching back nearly nine decades.
Present at the event were Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, several MLAs and MLCs, and senior officials from the education and construction departments. CM Nitish urged library administrators to maintain the building well and ensure all arrangements remain student-friendly.
