Patna: Police in Patna detained at least eight TRE-3 teacher recruitment candidates on Tuesday after dragging and pushing protesters, including women, who were demanding the release of supplementary results for the teacher recruitment exam.
The demonstration began at Patna College and moved through Khazanchi Road, Khetan Market, Gandhi Maidan, and Exhibition Road before police barricades halted the march. Videos showed police dragging candidates along the road and forcing them into vehicles, while female candidates were pushed during the scuffle.
Candidate Swati Kumari from Bhagalpur said, “Our result has been withheld. The government claims to educate daughters, but today it is making them run on the streets and lathicharging them.”
Candidates have been protesting in Gardanibagh for the past six months. They allege that while results for about 66,000 posts from classes 1 to 12 have been released, nearly 10,000 to 15,000 candidates were selected for two or even three places but will join only one. Protesters demand that remaining vacancies be filled by candidates who narrowly missed the cut-off.
This is not the first time such protests have turned tense. On May 6, police lathicharged candidates outside the Chief Minister’s residence, injuring several. Earlier on March 24, candidates had surrounded Education Minister Sunil Kumar’s residence, demanding release of the supplementary result. The situation escalated to the point that police had to escort the minister out safely.
While the education minister had promised on March 25 to request a review from the Bihar Public Service Commission, no notice has been issued so far. Adding to confusion, the commission released its 2025 recruitment calendar on March 20 without mentioning TRE-4, despite the minister assuring in the Assembly that TRE-4 would be held in May 2025.
